Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison

Glowing like a beacon against the waters of Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, the Wisconsin State Capitol building is a spectacular granite building designed by the famous architect George B. Post. The capitol complex is home to the state legislature and a National Historic Landmark. Check out the stunning mural in the rotunda and bronze statues throughout when you take one of several daily tours. You'll see art, hand carved furniture and glass mosaics from around the world.

The Rotunda

The first floor rotunda of the Capitol Building is the site of several monuments and the ground floor of the grand circular staircase to the second floor. This domed hallway features a copy of the Wisconsin state constitution, a bust of Robert M. LaFollette and a Liberty Bell replica.

The Lantern Balcony

The Lantern Balcony is an observation deck offering spectacular views of Madison from 236 feet above the ground. From the Balcony, you can see the entire Madison isthmus and beautiful Lake Mendota scenery.


  • When was the Capitol Building built?

    Costing over $7.25 million, construction of the current Wisconsin Capitol began late in 1906 and was completed in 1917. The building has the distinction of the only state capitol to be built on an isthmus.
  • How tall is the Wisconsin Capitol Building?

    The Wisconsin State Capitol is only 3 ½ feet shorter than our Nation’s Capital in Washington DC and measures over 284 feet from the ground floor to the top of the dome. It is the tallest building in Madison.
