Henry Vilas Zoo

Henry Vilas Zoo is an accredited AZA zoo located on 28 acres in Madison, Wisconsin with over half a million visitors every year. The Zoo is owned by the city of Madison and entry and parking to the zoo is free. It is home to primates like orangutans, white handed gibbons, golden lion tamarins, and colobus monkeys. Other animals include grizzly bears, camels, lions, giraffes, bison, goats, kangaroos, tigers, wallabies and seals.

The zoo has many popular annual events with participation from around the city. Some of the most upcoming events include, Mad City Mardi Gras at Liliana’s Restaurant, Annual Zoo Run Run, and Halloween at the Zoo.

The Children’s Zoo

Henry Vilas Zoo's Children's Zoo Barn is a 3,500 square feet animal shelter that houses alpaca, goats and other indoor and outdoor animal exhibits. The barn uses solar panels, a rain water collection system, radiant floors and geothermal technology.

  • Is there meeting or event space at the Zoo?

    Anna Vilas Hall is a rental space available at the zoo from October through mid-April. The space is ideal for family reunions, graduation parties, birthday parties and board meetings.
  • What’s new at the zoo?

    The Vilas Zoo is continuously striving to improve the current facilities and bring in new exhibits to the zoo. The most recent addition is the “Artic Passage” featuring a sprawling polar bear habitat with a unique underwater viewing area. The area offers a café with outdoor seating with a view of the bears.
